What Kind of Network Does Aetna Medicare Advantage Offer?

Depending on your area, Aetna offers both Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans. Both types of plans provide access to medical practitioners and services within a specified network of providers, but with some key differences.

Expand

HMO plans

  • Offer lower premiums than most PPO plans, with a low deductible or no deductible at all
  • Only cover doctors and services that are in your network (out-of-network care will be your responsibility)
  • May require a referral from your primary care physician (PCP) before you see a specialist
Expand

PPO plans

  • Cover both in- and out-of-network services (though out-of-network services may cost more)
  • Allow you to see any doctor or specialist, with or without a referral from your PCP
  • Generally have higher premiums and deductibles than HMO plans
