What is Medigap insurance?

If you’ve ever taken vitamins, you know just how important supplements can be to your health. Similar to how vitamin supplements help “fill the gaps” in your nutrition, Medigap (sometimes called Medicare Supplement) is a private insurance plan that helps fill the gaps in your Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) coverage by paying for some of your out-of-pocket medical expenses.

All you have to pay is a small monthly premium, and there are no network restrictions. You may even be able to add prescription drug coverage to your Medigap plan! To find out more about supplemental Medicare plans, talk to a licensed Aetna agent today.

Aetna Medicare Supplement insurance enhances your coverage

Adding Aetna Medigap insurance to your Original Medicare plan is a great way to supplement your coverage. Aetna Medigap plans offer a broad range of benefits that can help lower your medical bills, especially if you visit the doctor often or need long-term care.

Coverage varies depending on your location, so talk to a licensed Aetna agent today to learn more about Medigap plans in your area.

An Aetna Medigap plan may help with:

  • Copayments
  • Coinsurance
  • Deductibles
  • Emergency coverage while traveling abroad
  • Other out-of-pocket medical expenses not covered by Original Medicare

What’s the difference between Medigap and Medicare Advantage?

Both Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Medicare Supplement (Medigap) help pay for health care costs that aren’t covered by Original Medicare. However, they cover different medical services and supplies. Depending on where you live, you may add prescription drug coverage (Part D) to your Medigap plan, too.

Medicare Supplement Plan F

Offering the most comprehensive benefits of any Medicare Supplement plan, Aetna Medigap Plan F is designed to leave you with minimum out-of-pocket medical expenses after Original Medicare pays its portion on your insurance claim.

Covered benefits include:

  • Part A and B deductibles
  • Part A coinsurance charges up to 356 days after Medicare benefit limit
  • Part B coinsurance and copayments
  • Part A coinsurance charges up to 365 days after Medicare benefit limit
  • First 3 pints of blood for a covered medical procedure (annually)
  • Emergency care while traveling abroad

Medicare Supplement Plan G

Another popular plan, Aetna Medigap Plan G is nearly identical to Plan F, but with one exception: Part B deductibles are not included. This means your out-of-pocket Part B costs must meet your deductible before your coinsurance kicks in.

Covered benefits include:

  • Part A deductibles
  • Part B coinsurance and copayments
  • Part A coinsurance charges up to 365 days after Medicare benefit limit
  • First 3 pints of blood for a covered medical procedure (annually)
  • Limited emergency care while traveling abroad

Medicare Supplement Plan K

Unlike other Medicare Supplement plans, Aetna Medigap Plan K includes a yearly out-of-pocket spending limit ($5,560 in 2019) for Medicare-approved health care costs. Once you reach your plan’s annual limit, Medigap Plan K will pay 100 percent of your covered out-of-pocket costs for the rest of the year.

BEFORE annual limit is reached, Plan K covers 50% of:

  • Part A deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments
  • Part B coinsurance and copayments
  • First 3 pints of blood for a covered medical procedure (annually)

AFTER annual limit is reached, Plan K covers 100% of the above services for the rest of the year

Medicare Supplement Plan L

Aetna Medigap Plan L policies offer fewer benefits at a lower premium than more comprehensive Medigap plans. However, similar to Plan K, Medigap Plan L comes with an annual spending limit ($2,780 in 2019) on covered out-of-pocket medical expenses.

BEFORE annual limit is reached, Plan L covers 75% of:

  • Part A deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments
  • Part B coinsurance and copayments
  • First 3 pints of blood for a covered medical procedure (annually)

AFTER annual limit is reached, Plan L covers 100% of the above services for the rest of the year

Medicare Supplement Plan M

Offering a solid “middle ground” in terms of Medicare Supplement plan coverage and costs, Aetna Medigap Plan M provides a lot of the same coverage as Plan F, but with a few more limits and a lower premium.

Covered benefits include:

  • Part A deductible (50%)
  • Part A coinsurance charges up to 365 days after Medicare benefit limit
  • Part B coinsurance and copayments
  • First 3 pints of blood for a covered medical procedure (annually)
  • Emergency care while traveling abroad (80% of approved costs up to plan limit)

Medicare Supplement Plan N

Aetna Medigap Plan N pays for 100 percent of your Medicare Part B (medical coverage) coinsurance costs for a premium lower than other Medigap plans. However, there are a few things it doesn’t cover. For instance, you must pay a $20 copay for doctor’s office visits and a $50 copay for trips to the emergency room. In addition, Medigap Plan N does not cover your Medicare Part B deductible or Part B excess charges, and it doesn’t pay for emergency care while traveling abroad.

Covered benefits include:

  • Part A deductible
  • Part A coinsurance charges up to 365 days after Medicare benefit limit
  • Part B coinsurance and copayments (except for office and emergency room visits)
  • Part B preventative care coinsurance
  • First 3 pints of blood for a covered medical procedure (annually)
